Clockwise from top left: Stuart Weitzman Right Calf Hair Ankle Boot ($625) / Givenchy Calf Hair Sleeve Coat ($2,908) / Topshop Faux Pony Leather Collar ($45) / Acne Ponyhair Cosmo ($690) / BDG Contrast Coat ($149) / Maiyet Calf Hair Shoulder Bag ($2,750) / Sabine Faux Calf Hair Bangle ($15.99) / Topshop Leopard Print Collar ($45) / Gap Calf Hair Loafers ($49.95)

Oh, boy. PETA's going to hate me for this one, but what can I say? I love pony hair  No, it's not actually made from ponies! I'm not that heartless.

Pony hair, otherwise known as haircalf or calf hair, is just a fashiony term for hair-on leather, usually from a cow. And real or faux, dyed solid or patterned, the luxe material is turning up on bags, shoes, coats and jewelry this fall.

Since I wear leather and eat meat, I have no qualms about pony hair, but I understand that it's a personal choice. Whether you're comfortable with the real stuff or choose to fake it, there are options out there for everyone. So, please, put down the red paint and take a look.

  3. Whether it's made from pony hair or cow hair, it's still made from animal hair. I'm torn about this one because I do own some items with this element, but it's hard to find a fake alternative. At any rate, those polka dot loafers are adorable!
