Frank Gehry for Heller - Blah to Bright

Apart from a classic Eames shell chair, I've never understood the allure of plastic furniture. Yes, it looks sleek and modern, but in a living room full of down (or a deck full of weather-proof cushions), plastic furniture will always be the seat last-taken.

So, it's no surprise that Frank Gehry's 2004 silver collection for Heller turned me off completely. The man is a masterful architect, but I will be parking my posterior elsewhere thankyouverymuch.

Everything looks better in technicolor, though, and the 2011 Frank Gehry Color Collection is no exception. The bright versions of the silver originals are oddly appealing to a self-admitted hater. Plus, they're made in the U.S.A., so they are part of Unicahome's USO drive. That means 10% of purchases over $1,000 will be donated to the USO.

It's still not enough to make rethink my stance, but it's enough to make me do a double-take.

  1. These so don't look like plastic. However they may feel like plastic when you sit on them
