Earth Day Spotlight: Alkemie Jewelry

Eco-conscious clothing collections are a dime a dozen these days. From Alberta Ferretti to H&M, it seems everyone is jumping on the sustainability bandwagon. It's not quite as often, though, that we hear about a jewelry line with the same kind of regard for enivornmental and social responsibility.

Enter Alkemie. Founders Dara Gerson and Ashley Lowengrub each had successful jewelry lines using traditional metals, despite a certain wariness of the gem and fine metal industries. Finally, the two decided they could no longer support the toxic effects of mining on workers and the environment, giving birth to Alkemie.

Alkemie pieces are all handmade in Los Angeles of 100% reclaimed metal. Any leather is sourced from sustainable cattle ranchers and colored with non-toxic dye. Moreover, Alkemie's dedication to eco-sustainability, safe working conditions and fair wages means they donate 5% of proceeds to a different charity each month.

Now, at least, I can feel a little less guilty when I decide to splurge on those Thorn Bangles.
