The Return of Overalls?

The last time I wore overalls was in high school when my tennis team would dress alike on match days. Even then, I didn't own any; I had to borrow a railroad-striped denim pair from my doubles partner.

But now it seems overalls are coming back in a major (albeit slightly frightening) way - and not just from the safe distance of the runways.

Weekend Happenings

With a showroom full of new and vintage modern furniture by the likes of Herman Miller, Knoll and Vitra, Machine Age is pretty much the perfect home resource - except for the fact that it's totally out of my price range.

So imagine my excitement when I heard about the Machine Age Warehouse Sale on Sunday! And then imagine my disappointment when I realized I have an engagement party in New York that day. (It's ok, Suz. I love you more than furniture.)

The sale is around the corner from the store, and I really can't tell you what to expect, but it's Machine Age, so it has to be good.

Orbis - Just as Uncool as the Segway

The Orbis by Christopher Souto is an "urban mobility device" that's supposed to be a cooler version of the gyroscope-powered Segway. Well, it does fold up and come in fun colors, but I'm pretty sure you'd still look like a tool riding one down the street. I'll stick with my bike, thanks.

J. Crew Toughens Up

First, there was the edgy Fenton/Fallon jewelry collection. Now, there's the Grommet MaCalister Boots. J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons is unstoppable!

Time to break out my old 64-color box of Crayolas. That's right - it's an Yves Saint-Laurent coloring book! Available at Amazon.fr for €9.50.

The Cat Came Back

Backstage at Miu Miu Spring '10 / Zara Summer 2010 lookbook [via Knight Cat]

Woah! Zara's gone all Miu Miu on us. It's a pretty blatant case of copy-cattery, but I can't say I don't like it. Isn't imitation the finest form of flattery?

Local Design Spotlight: Fabricadabra

I went on a massive search last fall for modern, patterned yellow throw pillows, and boy do I wish I had known about Fabricadabra.

I first came across the Northborough, MA, company at a warehouse sale in South Boston where some beautiful ikat prints were calling to me. While the ikats remain some of my favorites, it turns out they are only a tiny fraction of what Fabricadabra has to offer.

Retro Rockettes

A little vintage inspiration for your weekend from the newly launched Rockettes.com.

Angry Chairs

The first piece of vicious-looking (but kind of adorable) furniture to come out of Milan last week was the Monster Chair by Marcel Wanders for Moooi.
 [via Dezeen]

Next in Milan was Fury! by Roel-jan Elsinga, a razor-sharp felt-covered design.

But my favorite is from a random dude calling himself "Tricky," who made these out of Eero Saarinen Executive Chairs. Amazing!

Jonathan Adler for 7

[via Racked]

I love it when design mediums collide! Interior design darling Jonathan Adler has collaborated with 7 For All Man Kind on "Adler," a limited-edition men's and women's collection of six jeans and six tops. The pieces, priced between $90 and $120, will arrive at Seven stores next month.

That print top isn't terribly exciting to me from a distance, but knowing what Jonathan Adler can do with a throw pillow,  I can't wait to see what else he has in store for us.

Weekend Happenings

What's with all the great events on Thursdays? Don't people know I'm an old fart when it comes to going out on weeknights? It looks like I may be starting my weekend early tonight, though. If only it weren't for that pesky thing called work on Friday.

25 Films that Shook the Fashion World

With the upcoming release of Sex and the City 2, The Times U.K. has put together a list of the top "25 movies that shook the world of fashion." The original Sex and the City is absent, but there are plenty of others that I'll be adding to my Netflix queue.

I can certainly vouch for some of the picks: I've already written of my praise for A Single Man, and West Side Story, Bonnie and Clyde, and Grey Gardens are classics of sartorial inspiration. I also appreciate that the writers do not take themselves too seriously to include Zoolander. I hate to admit, though, that there are a few on the list that I'm completely unfamiliar with.

Tribal Americas

Vogue U.K. March 2008 [via Fashion Gone Rogue]

This season's tribal influence has nothing on Vogue U.K., who apparently called it way back in '08 with this editorial by Mario Testino.

While Vogue's iteration is decidedly South American,  we're seeing a greater variation this spring, with more African patterns than you can shake a stick at. (Yes, I know that's the most nonsensical expression ever.) But Pendleton's collaboration with... well, pretty much everyone brings it back to the Western hemisphere.

Can you guess what this beautiful building in Miami is used for? It's not a high-end apartment buidling, a swanky hotel or a new museum.

Weekend Happenings - Marathon Monday Edition

The view from my office, pre-Marathon [image via Nick Barber]

This feels like the first weekend in a while that I don't have a million and one commitments. Plus, I have Monday off, since the Boston Marathon finish line is right in front of my office! I'll probably be at the office anyway, but I'll be out on the roof with Eric, a couple of friends and a picnic basket watching the race.

Otherwise, I'll be spending time with  my girlfriends, celebrating my cousin's birthday (happy birthday, Abs!), and possibly hitting up the North End for these:

Shake the Tree's Spring Jewelry & Cocktail Party
Friday, 7-9 PM
67 Salem St., North End
One of my favorite bloggers, Keyse of Crocodile Tears, will be showing off her Flauxy Studio jewelry line. Plus you can browse the boutique while enjoying cocktails by Thatcher's and nibbles from Sensing.

Twilight's Closet Raid for Charity
Saturday, 11 AM - 7 PM
12 Fleet St., North End
Twilight boutique's Alison Barnard and her friends have finished their spring cleaning and will offer their lightly-worn designer duds to the rest of us for $5-$100. All proceeds benefit Women for Women International. Very tempting...

Hand Soap

This just creeps me out, but if you find it cute and ironic, it's $18 at Plastic Foliage.

Fashion is Booming

Edited by Fashion Pulse Daily

Style cares not about the economy, so we continue on, falling in love with a fabulous pairs of shoes, lbd, and the perfect little cardie. New boutiques, designers, ideas, and innovative, avant garde concepts continue to emerge, and we can't help but start a new love story with our latest DIY project, amazing vintage find, department store score, or simply a fabulous floral umbrella. And so, as the title suggests, fashion is booming, creativity is soaring, and we can take a big exhale and shove our worries aside - it's time to allow ourselves to get excited about wearing some new or all-time favorite spring-weather garments and accessories.

As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!

[Note from Jennine] Oh, and if you're looking for something to do this summer... IFB is looking for interns!

H&M Festival Wear - Bringing Out the Dirty Hippie in All of Us?

Ok, confession time - I was a bit of a hippie in college. I've gone to my fair share of Phish and Dead shows, and I can camp in mud with the best of them. Which is why I was intrigued to hear that H&M's 3rd Fashion Against AIDS campaign is going with a festival theme.
