While some of the traditional gowns were stunning (see Sandra Bullock, Penelope Cruz), let's look at a few who went with more modern looks and made it work (as my favorite television catch phrase goes).
I'm pretty sure this woman can do no wrong. Maggie Gyllenhaal wore the hell out of this graphic watercolor print by Dries Van Noten.
I do my best to stay away from horizontal stripes, but Susan Downy (wife of Robert) pulled it off beautifully in Lanvin.
SJP is always one to take a chance. Here she is in Chanel Haute Couture, with a neck piece you'll either love or hate. (I fall in the former category.)
Some more Chanel Haute Couture (very recognizably so) on Diane Kruger. Not my favorite gown, but I love how the texture variation breaks up the standard column dress.
And finally, this amazing ruffled Versace isn't a huge risk for Demi Moore, but damn! Isn't this woman supposed to be 47? How is this possible?
I had pretty much the exact same thought about Diane Kruger's dress. It could have been merely pretty, but was much more interesting instead. I also really like SJP's dress, especially the front view, but also I did like the jewel at the back of the knees, no matter what anyone else said!
